PRESS RELEASE : 4000kgs OF EDIBLE FOOD RESCUED FROM THE 2015 SPLENDOUR FESTIVAL FOR PEOPLE IN NEED
Over the course of the Splendour Festival food vendors & caterers have excess edible food on a daily basis. As part of the Waste & Recycling Program for the Splendour Festival Liberation Larder was invited to work with staff to rescue & distribute any excess food from the event.
The result has been an enormous boost to the healthy food available to people in need in Byron Shire over past weeks. What does 4000kgs of edible rescued food look like? It is 10 cars packed to the brim with breads, meats, cheeses, milk, eggs, fresh fruit & vegetables, noodles, snacks, tea, coffee & juices. It is the equivalent of 1200 healthy & nutritious meals.
Liberation Larder has shared this windfall as far as possible through its breakfast, lunch & outreach program. Meals have been distributed through the Byron, Mullumbimby & Brunswick Community Centres & excess produce has been shared with other food providers in the shire.
All the green waste from the Larder kitchen has been reused in partnership with Byron Herb Nursery & our Verge Gardens.
This has been a huge logistics exercise for our completely volunteer organisation. Liberation Larder thanks the Splendour crew for the opportunity to be involved in this initiative. Many people have benefited from this healthy & wholesome food. Also our environment has been saved from all those carbon emissions.
