Liberation Larder has appreciated the opportunity given to us by Falls Festival. Many people in need in our community have benefited from your initiative & will continue to for some time. Also your initiative has prevented all that excess finding its way to landfill.
Everything ran smoothly thanks to Maria’s work on site with the vendors. We had five loaded vehicles remove excess food from the Falls site over two days. We were also contacted by vendors on the Monday & received additional food, milk & drinks .
We estimate that if we combined all of the food, drinks & milk received into one meal we could provide a nutritious & healthy meal for approximately 550 – 600 people in need. Of course this was not possible at short notice. So we shared the 630 liters of milk as far as possible. Through the Larder breakfast & lunch programs we were able to reach a lot of people. We also shared the milk with other Community Organisations who assist people in need in Byron Shire including Byron, Mullumbimby & Brunswick Heads Community Centres, the Salvation Army Byron Street Mission, the Byron Temple, the Byron Homeless Breakfast. These organisations were enormously grateful & without fail stated how rare it is to have fresh milk to give people.
Liberation Larder chefs & volunteers have been making meals throughout the week with the produce we received & will continue to for several weeks to come. These meals will be available in our breakfast & lunch programs each Monday & Thursday & photos are available on our Facebook page. Also many meals have been prepared that will supplement our emergency meals program, Larder Connect over coming weeks. These meals are packaged & frozen then distributed through the Community Centres in Byron Shire to people in need.
All the green waste from the produce received will be reused. The Larder works in partnership with Byron Council & Byron Herb Nursery to maintain six verge gardens in Byron CBD. The green waste will go to the Herb Nursery for their Worm Farms & will be returned in vegetable & herb seedlings for the verge gardens.
